RIZAL PROVINCE,Philippines — The traditional “Alay Lakad” of pilgrims and penitents to Antipolo City’s cathedral housing the centuries old statue of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage literally became “Alay Kalat” as thousands of trash littered the highway yesterday.

Trash, mostly are plastic bottles can be found scattered along the stretch of Ortigas Avenue from Cainta and Taytay, all the way to Antipolo City following the traditional penitential walk of more than a million pilgrims that started in the afternoon of Holy Thursday and ended after dawn of Good Friday yesterday.

The Rizal Police Provincial Office (PPO) said the yearly event that was joined by some 1.5 million Catholic penitents was generally peaceful. Senior Inspector Bartolome Marigondon, PPO Spokesman, said some penitents yielded screw drivers, and small bladed weapons following the random frisking and inspection.
