PDEA destroys P3 million worth of chemicals, lab equipment

MANILA, Philippines — Chemicals and laboratory equipment worth P3-million allegedly used for manufacturing illegal drugs were destroyed by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) at an accredited treatment facility in Punturin, Valenzuela City on Friday.

PDEA said the chemicals and laboratory equipment seized in drug raids were ordered destroyed after regional trial courts in Metro Manila and nearby provinces certified these were no longer needed as evidence in court proceedings.

Undersecretary Jose S. Gutierrez, Jr., PDEA director general, led the destruction of the chemicals and the equipment at the Green Planet Management, Inc. (GPMI), an accredited destruction facility, the PDEA said.

The chemicals consisted of liquid substances like toluene, methanol, hydrochloride acid, nitric acid, chloroform and ethyl acetate; 64,3175 kilograms of solid chemicals like sodium chloride, red phosphorus, sodium acetate, iodine and sodium chloride, potassium hydroxide and carbon; expired controlled precursors and essentials chemicals (CPECs) were incinerated along with the laboratory equipment.

The chemicals were seized during operations by the PDEA, the Philippine National Police (PNP), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Bureau of Customs, and private firms, Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez lauded the efforts of the different regional trial court branches in Manila, Quezon City, Pasay City and other nearby provinces like Pampanga, Rizal, and La Union for the expeditious prosecution and disposition of drug cases that led to the prompt destruction of the chemicals and equipment.

The burning was made in compliance with guidelines on the disposition of seized dangerous drugs, controlled precursors and essentials chemicals (CPECs) and laboratory equipment under RA 9165 and the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) Regulation No. 1 series of 2002.
