NATURAL CRYSTALS have become mainstream in recent years. While most people buy crystals in jewelry form for their aesthetic value, many have begun buying them for their healing properties.
Crystal therapy is a popular healing practice involving the use of gemstones and crystals to “cleanse” the person of bad energy believed to cause an illness.
For centuries, Eastern cultures have depicted the use of gems and amulets. Crystals and gemstones have been found in archaeological digs. Ancient Egyptians and Persians were strong believers in the powers of crystals and gemstones.
Long-time crystal enthusiast Rodina Chua-Velasco of www.Crystallarium.com notes that crystals can promote good chi (energy) flow and bring balance to a person’s overall well-being. I credit Rodina for introducing me to the world of crystals. I was once a cynic, not believing that crystals have such healing powers.
I remember spending, as a young adult, a portion of my vacation allowance on natural stones like amethysts and citrines. Rodina informed me that I had naturally gravitated to these stones because in likelihood, I needed them or would need them one day.
True enough, I collect amethysts because they’re “calming” crystals that help the wearer counter stress and allow for a more restful sleep—and I was no stranger to stress and insomnia. I was also picking citrines unknowingly because I had indigestion.
Rodina had advised me to wear a citrine bracelet, and true enough, after four months, I noticed considerable improvements in my digestive system.
Placebo effect
Testaments such as mine are easily brushed off by scientific minds as a placebo effect. Karen Ryan, a Canada-based crystal energy therapist, adds: “Your commitment to the crystal is part of the healing process. Let the crystal do the work for you. The length of time to obtain the effects desired will depend on the quality of the crystal, location of wear, duration, and the crystal’s appropriateness to your healing... Select your crystal with an honest outlook on the real problem.”
Religious organizations are very cautious about crystal healing, because the practice seems deeply rooted in the spiritual realm and alludes to the idea that some kind of unknown source is working behind it. But despite the absence of solid scientific evidence supporting claims of those who have been “healed” by crystals, throngs of people continue to believe in them.
Rodina adds that, while crystals seem to possess certain healing powers, they should not be used as the sole “medication” to cure ailments. “Crystals are there for guidance, as an added bonus or help if you will. It shouldn’t serve as a substitute for medical attention. However, if crystals can help, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t use them as a supplement. At the end of the day, you buy crystals because they bring you some form of satisfaction and happiness—and that in itself is already a positive result.”
