MANILA, Philippines — An almost five-hour fire of undetermined origin razed a residential area in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City Wednesday night, injuring three persons and rendering 900 families homeless. Arson probers placed the damage to properties at P10 million.
The fire which destroyed more or less 300 houses started at around 7 p.m. and was put under control before midnight. The affected residents used a basketball court of the neighboring subdivision as their temporary shelter.
Chief Superintendent Santiago Laguna National Capital Region (NCR) fire marshal said that blaze immediately spread in the neighborhood as the houses were made of light and highly-combustible materials.
A resident in the area said a certain Jun Leyba suffered second-degree burns in the face and other parts of the body.
Several firetrucks from various fire districts and volunteer fire brigades within and near Quezon City responded to the scene.
But because the affected area was located at the back of the Metro Heights Subdivision, and can only be reached through a narrow pathway, the firemen faced difficulty in containing the fire.
Mayor Herbert Bautista went to the site to extend help to the fire victims.
Bautista also said that some of the residents in the area were Gawad Kalinga awardees, which means, that the parcel of land, which they have built structures on, have already been awarded to them by the local government, thus are no longer considered informal settlers.
