Manila, Philippines - Six months after ending her nine-year presidency, former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has become poorer by P2.148 million.
Her two congressmen-sons – Juan Miguel or Mikey of the party-list group Ang Galing Pinoy and Diosdado or Dato of Camarines Sur – lost P6.7 million and P3.1 million, respectively, in net worth.
Mrs. Arroyo and her sons shed a combined P12 million in wealth in 2010, compared to what they were worth in 2009.
Like the former president and her sons, her brother-in-law, Rep. Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo of Negros Occidental, saw his wealth shrinking, but only by P600,000.
Still, the four of them had P460.9 million in combined net worth last year.
Based on her statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) filed with the House of Representatives, as of Dec. 31, 2010, Mrs. Arroyo had total assets of P175.192 million and liabilities of P34.980 million for a net worth of P140.212 million.
Her assets included “personal/other properties” valued at P167.495 million and real estate worth P7.967 million.
As of June 30, 2010, when she officially left MalacaƱang, the former president had a net worth of P142.360 million based on the SALN she filed with the Ombudsman’s office.
That was down by more than P3 million from her P145.791 million net worth as of Dec. 31, 2009. She had no liabilities in 2009.
She was worth P66.7 million on Dec. 31, 2001, less than a year after succeeding former President Joseph Estrada.
Mikey, who is facing a tax evasion case together with his wife Angela, declared a net worth of P95.5 million as of the end of 2010, down from P102.2 million in 2009.
Dato put his net worth at P87.3 million, down from P90.4 million in 2009.
Iggy, on the other hand, was worth P137.9 million as of last Dec. 31, down from P138.5 in 2009.
Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, the fifth richest member of the House and a close ally of Mrs. Arroyo, lost P1.7 million in net worth, from P477.3 million in 2009 to P475.6 million a year later.
However, two other staunch allies of the former president, Danilo Suarez of Quezon and Amelita Villarosa of Mindoro Occidental, grew their wealth.
Suarez increased his wealth from P151.7 million in 2009 to P154.5 million in 2010, while Villarosa’s net worth gained slightly from P114.9 million to P115.5 million.
Negros Occidental’s Julio Ledesma IV, one of the top absentee-congressmen, padded his wealth by more than P100 million, from P447.5 million to P555.1 million.
The richest House members are neophytes - Manny Pacquiao of Sarangani, who is worth P1.1 billion, followed by Alfredo Abelardo Benitez of Negros Occidental, who is worth P624.8 million.
