14 injured in three separate road accidents in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines — At least 14 persons were injured in three separate accidents involving an 18-wheeler truck and two passenger buses in Tondo, Manila and in Quezon City Thursday.

The first accident happened at around 10 p.m. in Road 10, Tondo, Manila after an 18- wheeler rammed into a row of houses.

Authorities said Billy Delgado, 44, and a certain Leonardo, 49, were injured and rushed to the Gat Andres Bonifacio hospital after being hit by the truck.

An owner-type jeep, a “kuliglig” and three shanties were damaged because of the accident.

The driver of the truck, identified later as Jose Abad, allegedly left the scene after the accident.

His helper told traffic investigators that they tried to avoid another vehicle while they were traveling on the road and ended up smashing through the houses to stop their momentum.

Meanwhile, 12 passengers of a passenger bus were injured after it smashed into a waiting shed along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Barangay Apolonio Samson, Quezon City at around 2 a.m.

The driver and conductor of the bus told investigators that the brakes of their vehicle malfunctioned.

The driver said he tried to steer the bus out of trouble on the slippery road when the brakes malfunctioned but ended up hitting a waiting shed.

Luchielin Kurimao, one of the passengers injured, claimed the bus was traveling very fast when the accident happened. She said this was the real cause of the accident.

Elsewhere in Quezon City, another passenger bus rammed into a concrete barrier on Regalado Avenue at around 1 a.m. after the driver allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel.

Maximo Bagbagin, the bus driver's co-worker, told traffic investigators that his driver might have fallen asleep and caused the accident.

The concrete barrier was pushed all the way to the middle of the road by the bus.

The bus left the scene of the accident immediately after.

The concrete barrier caused traffic to build up in the area until some of the motorists moved it out of the way.
