Apple: More than 1M downloads of 'Lion' on 1st day

More than one million users bought and downloaded Apple Inc.'s latest operating system – OS XLion – on the first day after its launch.

In a news release, Apple said Lion – the first OS available via download from the Mac App Store – appears to be the fastest-selling OS release in Apple's history.

“Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

He added Lion is a "huge step forward" as it is "not only packed with innovative features but it’s incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we’ve ever made."

Apple said Lion has more than 250 new features for the Mac, including Multi-Touch gestures; system-wide support for full screen apps; Mission Control, an innovative view of everything running on the Mac; the Mac App Store; Launchpad, a new home for all apps; and a completely redesigned Mail app.

One of Lion's notable features is an integration of sorts with the Mac App Store, allowing users to find new apps.

Users can buy apps using their iTunes account, then download and install them.

"The Mac App Store is built right into Lion and available for Snow Leopard users through Software Update as part of Mac OS X version 10.6.8," Apple said.
