'Pedring' toll: 39 dead, P3.4B in damages, 12 calamity areas

The death toll from typhoon "Pedring" (Nesat) rose to 39 while damage to property jumped to P3.428 billion as of Thursday evening, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

At least 12 areas have been declared under a state of calamity while four other areas were considering doing the same.

In its 6 p.m. update, the NDRRMC also said 43 were reported injured and 31 remain missing, while 124 were rescued.

Among the most recent fatalities were:

- Adrian Ray Quiaoit, 14, Veteran's Village, Quezon City (electrocuted)
- Efren Pascual, 47, Puerto Rivas, Lote, Bataan (hit by fallen tree)
- "Denzer" of Catanghalan, Obando, Bulacan (drowning)
- Jimplex Suniga, Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija (drowning)

Damage to property was estimated at P3,428,265,066.90, including P142,392,250 in infrastructure and P3,285,872,816.90 in agriculture losses.

According to the NDRRMC, some hospitals sustained typhoon damage and among these facilities are:

- NCR: Quirino Memorial Medical Center (collapsed wall in parking lot);
- San Lorenzo Ruiz Women’s Hospital (flooded first floor);
- Ospital ng Maynila (ground floor flooded);
- Region II: Southern Isabela General Hospital (roofs damaged); and
- Region III: Regional Health Unit of Paombong, Bulacan (roof damaged).

The NDRRMC said "Pedring" affected 148,002 families or 679,565 people in 1,208 villages in 182 towns and 32 cities in 31 provinces.

Of these, 34,801 families or 164,293 people were sheltered and cared for in 396 evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, 34 bridges and road sections remained impassable, including five in Cagayan Valley, six in Central Luzon, five in Southern Luzon, two in Bicol, and 16 in Cordillera.

State of calamity

At least 12 areas have been declared under a state of calamity, including:

- Santiago City (Isabela)
- Obando, Calumpit and Meycauayan City (Bulacan)
- Olongapo City
- Dinalupihan (Bataan)
- Tarlac City
- Nueva Ecija
- Noveleta (Cavite)
- Malabon, Navotas and Marikina Cities (NCR)

The NDRRMC said these areas may also be declared calamity zones.

- Tuguegarao City
- Isabela
- Nueva Vizcaya
- Aurora province
