Barring any sudden change in direction, a tropical storm will enter the Philippine area of responsibility Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Wednesday night.
In its Twitter account, PAGASA indicated the tropical storm (international codename, "Kulap") appears headed for Japan but may pass by the Philippines.
"Tropical Storm 'Kulap' will enter the Philippine area of responsibility Friday morning and will be called Tropical Storm 'Nonoy.' Trackline is towards Southern Japan," it said.
PAGASA noted "Kulap" is the Thai word for rose.
Last Monday, PAGASA had said it does not expect any cyclone to enter Philippine territory, at least until Friday.
Should the cyclone enter Philippine territory, it will be the first of "three to four" cyclones that will enter Philippine territory this September.
Another "two to three" are due in October, and "one to two" in November, the state weather forecaster said.
