MANILA, Philippines – 25-year-old Leila Lopes is not only the 2011 Miss Universe but she is the first Angolian contestant to have landed her country on the map of the world-renowned pageant.
Born in Benguela province and to Cape Verdean parents, Leila is a business management student in United Kingdom. She, however, had to put her studies on hold after she was crowned Miss Angola 2011, as reported by Agencia AngolaPress.
What she said in her VTR for the “Getting to Know the Top 10” segment, which was aired during the pageant held Sept. 13 at the CrediCard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has apparently materialized.
“I hope I can see myself as Miss Universe so I can tell that to my children,” she said.
She added, “I also want to finish my undergraduate [degree]. I want to do masters in Business Management in order to become a successful businesswoman.”
A PR Newswire release stated that Leila has always been a fan of beauty pageants and has developed particular interest in reading as well as cosmetics.
She may well have showed that she’s not just a beauty queen who is recognized for her looks and charisma, but someone who supports worthy causes. Leila has rallied behind improving the welfare of deprived children as well as fighting against the proliferation of HIV/AIDS, the Agencia AngolaPress stated in a separate article.
A Sao Paulo resident deemed Leila’s achievement as a “well-deserved” one.
"We were cheering for her all along. Her smile and her friendliness was what set her apart from the others. She also answered her question very well, that likely helped her a lot,” 36-year-old Carolina Rocha was quoted by an Associated Press article as saying.
Leila follows the reign of last year’s Miss Universe, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.
