MANILA, Philippines – A man identified as James Ong was nabbed by authorities Tuesday for videotaping the Metro Manila Film Festival entry, “Panday 2,” inside a mall in Makati City.
“Anniversary yata nilang mag-asawa, parang na[pag]katuwaan. Basta yung mere possession, na nakuha sa kanya yung ebidensya, eh violation na 'yun ng batas na Anti-Camcording Act,” SPO1 Joseph Capuli of the Makati PNP said in an interview with “Umagang Kay Ganda” on Dec. 28.
Under the Anti-Camcording Act of 2010 (Republic Act 10088), any person caught using or attempting to use a recording device, or even “aiding, abetting, or conniving in such acts,” “to transmit or make a copy of any performance in an exhibition facility of cinematographic film or other audiovisual work,” may it be for public or private purposes, “shall be subject to a fine of P 50,000 to P 750, 000 and will face imprisonment of a minimum six months and one day to six years and one day.”
Imus Productions, producer of the movie, has reportedly already lodged a complaint against Ong.
A separate story on dzmm.com.ph said that Ong, a former overseas Filipino worker, was caught inside Glorietta Mall’s Cinema 3. Both DZMM and “UKG” also reported that a pair of sunglasses with a built-in camera was confiscated from him.
Ong declined to comment, with Capuli saying that this was so because “meron na siyang abugado.” He is currently detained at the Makati City Police Headquarters.
It wasn’t the first case of piracy for this year’s MMFF. An article on Journal Online posted Tuesday reported that a pair of lovers has also been caught by an Optical Media Board personnel while recording the film, “Enteng ng Ina Mo” using their cell phones inside a cinema at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.
Police Chief Sr. Supt. Armando Bolalin identified the offenders as 23-year old Bernard Garcia of Taguig City and “Tisay,” who reportedly denied the accusation.
Garcia and “Tisay” are being detained at the Mandaluyong City Police Station “as charges of anti-piracy is set to be filed against them,” the Journal Online story read.
