After successfully conquering the weights, Brian Viloria eyes to overcome formidable challenger Giovanni Segura next.
The 31-year-old champion expects war when he puts his World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight crown on the line against the hard-hitting Mexican in a 12-round title showdown on Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
"He’s ready to go to war. I’m ready to go to war. This is going to be a great fight," said the Filipino-American fighter shortly after Saturday’s official weigh-in at the Midas Hotel.
Viloria, owner of a 28-3 record (16 knockouts), is making a mandatory defense of his 112-pound crown he won five months ago after scoring a unanimous decision against Julio Cesar Miranda.
Going to the fight, Viloria remains a 2-1 underdog.
That's understandable.
The 29-year-old challenger sports a fearsome 28-1-1 record, 24 of the wins by KO.
A former WBO and World Boxing Council (WBC) light-flyweight champion, Segura is the one responsible for Puerto Rican great Ivan Calderon's two losses. Those losses put a blot on Calderon's colorful Hall of Fame career.
The native of Ciudad, Altamirano, Mexico is also ranked ninth in Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound list.
Like Viloria, Segura also came in at exactly 112 lbs.
"I feel good," said the Mexican in refuting earlier reports that he’s having problems making the weight days into the title fight. "I didn't throw up the way I used to do in the past. I'm hungry. I'll think of the food right now, and think about Brian tomorrow."
Both fighters said they'll climb up the ring at 120 lbs.
Rooting Viloria at ringside is reigning WBO welterweight title holder Manny Pacquiao, who will serve as one of the TV panelist in the fight dubbed 'Island Assault 3' and presented by Solar Sports and giant network GMA-7.
New York-based American referee Samuel Viruet will serve as the third man in the ring, while the three judges scoring the bout are Ulysess Glen (U.S), Harry Davis (Canada) and Danrex Tapdasan (Philippines).
