MANILA, Philippines — A potential terrorist threat to the feast of the Black Nazarene has compelled President Benigno S. Aquino III to encourage devotees to celebrate the rites at home if possible.
The President however assured that the government has bolstered security measures to thwart any attack by local extremists and ensure the safety of devotees planning to attend the religious rites in Manila on Monday.
Aquino warned the nation of a possible threat to disrupt the Black Nazarene feast on the eve of the celebration that will be attended by millions of Filipinos.
"Over the past few months we have been apprised of intentions to create disruptions in the National Capital Region, during the Feast of the Black Nazarene. Previously, the difference between their intentions and capabilities has been quite pronounced. The possibility prompts us to warn you of the risk in attending the procession," the President said in a press conference in the Palace.
"If they can accept that as a practice and as an alternative, that will undoubtedly lessen the risk," Aquino said when asked if he will encourage devotees to observe the religious tradition at home.
"But there will be those regardless of the threat level will still insist in doing so, it is the state's obligation to protect them to the fullest extent possible," he added.
The President urged the Black Nazarene devotees to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities amid "heightened risk" during the religious procession.
