San Miguel Beermen’s defense and great teamwork proved to be too much for the Chang Thailand Slammers to overcome as the Beermen finished the game with 29 assists to grab a 103-76 win at the Thai Japanese Association Gym.
With this win, the Beermen are now at the top of the standings table with 14 wins and 4 losses.
Nick Fazekas led all scoring with 22 points and 7 rebounds for the Beermen, who are now on a four-game winning streak. Chris Banchero added 15 points and 7 assists in his second game in a Beermen jersey. Leo Avenido finished with 15 points and Duke Crews had 14 points.
It looked promising earlier in the game for the Slammers as they jumped to a quick 17-6 lead behind Darongpan Apiromvilachai’s 8 points but Avenido and Banchero quickly responded by scoring a quick 9 points to trim the Slammers’ lead to 19-21. The first quarter ended with both teams tied at 26.
The Beermen closed the second quarter wih a 10-0 run to make it 52-38 going into halftime. The Beermen started to run away with their lead in the start of the third quarter.The Beermen came out of the locker room with a 8-0 run. A basket from Avenido stretched the Beermen’s lead to 60-38.
Going into the final quarter with a 79-56 lead did not stop the Beermen from staying aggressive on offense. The Beermen had their biggest lead in the game at 89-57 with 8:14 left in the game after Benedict Fernandez made a three-point shot.
Darongpan Apiromvilaichai, who had a breakout performance by finishing with 18 points, hit a shot to trim the Beermen’s lead to 73-96 with 2:47 left in the game but that was as close as the Slammers could get to the Beermen. Calvin Williams had his sixth double-double of the season with 20 points and 17 rebounds but Wiliams also had 8 turnovers for the Slammers who are now holding on to a very slim chance of going to the playoffs. Chris Garnett added 14 points for the Slammers who will be facing a must win game on Saturday April 28th when they face the hot streaking Indonesia Warriors at Britama Arena.
The Beermen will fly back home and host the JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers on Wednesday April 25th.
