MANILA, Philippines — Easter, which marks the end of the 40-day Lenten observance, is the central feast in the Christian liturgical year.
According to the gospels, Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. This miracle, which is widely perceived as the fulfilment of His promise, is celebrated on Easter Day or Easter Sunday.
For the Christian community, Easter is a promise of one’s resurrection after the hardships and intricacies during mortal existence, and symbolizes the eternal life that is granted to all who believe in Christ. The annual commemoration of this special day signifies the Christians’ strong belief that indeed, the Lord came to earth with a life to give so that each one of us may continue to live. This glorious faith breathes hope, love, and joy into our hearts and souls, and inspires us to follow Christ’s example and do good to our fellowmen. Considering all this, Easter is truly the foundation of the Christian faith and an occasion that invigorates every Christian’s life.
Beyond the significance to one’s faith, I hope that this Easter will also take on another kind of significance for the Filipino people. Presently, there is a growing cynicism among us. Many are dissatisfied with the government’s performance and numerous Filipinos are unhappy about the country’s economy as well as their livelihood and income. A majority of the masses still do not have access to justice, education, adequate health facilities, and basic housing. Amidst this unfortunate scenario, I hope this Easter will bring a new ray of hope for the Filipino people and instill in them an enduring optimism, an outlook that will make our countrymen believe that there are better things in store for us. Further, I wish that the celebration of Easter will help our people believe that there is hope for better days.
As we observe Easter this year, may this special occasion give us all the direction and the opportunity to start all over, and infuse in us inner goodness, excellence, and a genuine concern for each other. I hope that your celebration of Easter will be filled with the joy that Christ offers in His resurrection, and overflowing with renewed hope that our nation will finally achieve peace and progress. On this day, let us also not forget to remember His sacrifice, and rejoice in the Lord.
