The Under-22 men’s national football squad continue their preparations for the Asian Cup Qualifiers in Myanmar slated June 23 to July 3 though they bowed 5-1 to Cambodia in Phnom Penh, Thursday, June 14.
OJ Porteria scored the only goal for the Philippines, a penalty in the 87th minute, though they were already down by four at this point.
Things started badly for the U22’s preparations for the Qualifiers as they suffered a disappointing 9-1 defeat to Thailand.
UP Diliman striker Jinggoy Valmayor, who won the UAAP Rookie of the year for 2011, grabbed the only goal for the Philippines, but it was hardly consolation as Thailand almost achieved double figures.
Following that result, the U22s faced off against Thai side Osotspa Saraburi, who finished sixth in the Thai Premier League last season. Losing 4-0 there, the U22s will now face the Maldives U22 ahead of their Qualifying campaign.
The Philippines are without several key players, though, including Roland Müller, Manny Ott, Jason De Jong and Joshua Beloya, who all played in the ill fated South East Asian Games.
The campaign ended in four losses and one win—a dramatic come from behind victory over Laos, amidst relationship issues between the team and management.
The Hartmann brothers are out of the squad, Matthew being suspended indefinitely for leaving the team in Jakarta during the South East Asian Games while brother Mark has not playing since tweeting his discontent at being a substitute during those games.
Global keeper Paolo Pascual is now the captain of the side who are hoping for better performances against the Maldives in their final preparations for the Asian Cup Qualifiers.
Only two teams from each group and the best third placed team overall will make it through to the main tournament in 2013.
The Philippines U22s have been drawn in a strong group alongside South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Burma and Taiwan.
Given their tough group and recent results, the Philippines U22s will be looking to simply perform well and have something to build on for the next tournament.
