MANILA, Philippines - A Church official has welcomed the decision of the Pasay City court to allow former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to post bail in her electoral satobage case.
Cotabato Auxiliary Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo said anyone should be given the right to seek legal remedies provided by the court.
"It’s the right of everyone to avail of the remedies of the court...Anyone has the right to be heard in the court, in other words, all are presumed innocent until found guilty," the bishop told Church-run Radyo Veritas.
He added that the former chief executive has the right to live outside the detention because the prosecution failed to present enough evidence against her.
Fr.Ranhillo Aquino, dean of San Beda College Graduate School of Law, said Judge Jesus Mupas of the Pasay City Regional Trial Court branch 112 made it clear in his order that Arroyo was allowed to post bail for lack of sufficient evidence.
The prelate said it was also clear that the Department of Justice hastily filed the charges against her to detain her.
"The point is rather clear--the Department of justice hurried charges against her to lock her up and so hurriedly conjured a weak case against her. If anything at all, it points to the vindictiveness by which cases are hurriedly filed against political foes and the misuse of the processes of law," Fr. Aquino said.
