State weather forecasters on Tuesday hinted at the possibility of two cyclones bringing rain to the country at almost the same time this week, as they track two low-pressure areas east of Philippine territory.
Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration forecaster Jori Loiz said the LPAs are located east of Tuguegarao (Cagayan) and Mindanao.
"’Yan ang problema namin kung sino mauuna," Loiz said in an interview on dzBB radio.
If both LPAs become cyclones while inside Philippine territory, they will be codenamed "Gener" and "Helen."
Loiz said their models show the LPA east of Tuguegarao may intensify into a cyclone by Thursday, but is not likely to make landfall and will instead move north.
On the other hand, he said the LPA east of Mindanao has slowed down but may merge with a nearby LPA and become a cyclone as well.
Earlier, PAGASA forecaster Glaiza Escollar said the LPA east of Mindanao may become a cyclone as early as Thursday.
"Ang sa ilalim kung hindi magbabago ang condition, before weekend magiging bagyo," Loiz said.
The Philippines is still reeling from monsoon rain brought by tropical depression "Ferdie" (Vincent). At least three people were reported dead in the wake of the monsoon rain.
Floods, landslides in Northern Luzon
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the LPA east of Mindanao had remained almost stationary for six hours and was 910 km east of Mindanao as of 11 a.m. Tuesday.
It added the LPA east of Northern Luzon was estimated at 300 km east of Tuguegarao.
"These weather disturbances and the southwest monsoon will bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Northern and Central Luzon and Mindanao, becoming widespread rain over Northern Luzon which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said.
