MANILA, Philippines — Rain or Shine has affirmed its trust and confidence on Chris Tiu, selected seventh overall during the PBA draft two weeks ago, and plans to sign him up today to a three-year deal worth P8.55 million, the maximum allowable for a PBA rookie.
Tiu joins the other top picks who have been signed by their respective teams and given the maximum rookie salary. These include Junmar Fajardo (No.1), Alex Mallari (No.3), both of Petron, Cliff Hodge (No. 4) of Meralco, Aldrech Ramos (No. 5) of B-Meg and Chris Ellis (No. 6) of Ginebra.
No. 2 pick Alvin Abueva of Alaska will sign after the NCAA tournament where he is playing for San Sebastian College.
Under PBA rules, maximum salaries for rookies are P150,000 a month during the first year, P225,000 in the second year and P337,000 in the third year.
Won game bonuses as well as other incentives such as when teams reach the playoffs, semifinals and finals are not disclosed in the contract and usually is a private agreement among players and teams. Bonus is also given to players with personal achievements such as winning the MVP and inclusion in the Mythical Five.
Tiu attended the Elasto Painters’ first practice last Monday but did not join the scrimmage and drills and only did some shooting. The former Ateneo star and Smart Gilas veteran is still recuperating from a left hamstring injury.
After nearly a year of inactivity, Tiu appeared to be raring to go.
“I’m excited, of course,” said Tiu. “Unfortunately I wasn’t able to join the practice. But looking at the plays they’re running, I think it’s simple, I can adjust to the system of coach Yeng Guiao. It’s basic, but every move has a sense, has a purpose.”
Tiu said he will be ready by next week, together with the other regulars including Smart-Gilas II members Gary David, Gabe Norwood and Jeff Chan, who were given extra days off after returning to the country Monday.
In another PBA development, Global Port coach Glenn Capacio shot down reports which appeared in this paper that former rookie of the year and 2010 No. 2 overall pick Al-Hussaini is on the trading block.
Global Port was said to be gunning for Talk N’ Text’s Japeth Aguilar and was planning to offer Al-Hussaini and Francis Allera in exchange for Aguilar.
“You seldom see a player that has the talent of Rabeh so we will stick with him,” said Capacio. “He will blossom into one of the dominant big guys in the league, that is our main mission.”
Capacio sees Rabeh at center combining with JV Casio at point guard and prolific shooter Gary David in his up tempo system.
“It’s good to have that kind of combination, you have one player hitting from afar and one who has the promise of becoming the king of the paint,” said Capacio.
With his height and size, Al-Hussaini can match-up well with any center in the league even against Asi Taulava of Meralco and Sonny Thoss of Alaska.
Another good thing about Al-Hussaini, added Capacio, is that he has the speed and shooting touch.
Al Hussaini has had his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) repaired a year ago and appeared to have fully recovered from the surgery.
