MANILA, Philippines -- Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno enjoys the trust of nearly half of Filipinos with about the same number saying they approved of her appointment, the results of a survey by The Issues and Advocacy Center (The Center) showed.
The Center’s Pulso ng Pilipino third quarter survey showed 49 percent of respondents said they trust Sereno as against 34 percent who said they did not and 17 percent who replied they “do not know.”
This gave Sereno a +15 percent net trust rating.
On the other hand, 48 percent of the respondents said they approved of President Benigno Aquino III’s choice to replace Renato Corona, who was ousted after being found guilty of betrayal of public trust by the Senate impeachment court.
Thirty-nine percent said they disapproved of Sereno’s appointment and 13 percent said they “don’t know.”
The non-commissioned survey was conducted from August 24 to 30 using face-to-face interviews with 1,200 registered voters in the National Capital Region, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
Sereno, who, at 52, could hold her post for a potential 18 years, was chosen by Aquino over more senior members of the high court.
On public awareness of her appointment, the survey showed 92 percent of respondents learned about it over radio and television, or read it in the newspapers. A very small 8 percent said they were not aware of the appointment.
In the same survey, Vice President Jejomar Binay earned with the highest satisfaction rating -- 61 percent -- of the country’s top four government officials.
He was followed by Aquino with 45 percent, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile with 47 percent, and Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. with 23 percent.
At the time the survey was conducted, the issues most prominent in media were the death of Secretary Jesse Robredo, security concerns over the territorial conflict in the West Philippine Sea, the positioning of candidates for the 2013 elections, the surge of the economy to 5.9 percent in the second quarter, Sereno’s appointment, and the need for medical treatment abroad for former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
