ALBAY, Philippines – Villagers in Albay province have sought safer grounds amid the threat posed by flash floods in their communities. Residents of Barangay Buhatan in Sto. Domingo town started their preemptive evacuation at around 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to Mayor Herbie Aguas.
He said the village is vulnerable to flash floods, landslides, and tidal waves.
“We have to be vigilant,” Aguas said.
Some residents said they have gotten used to seeking safer areas during disasters. “Ilang bagyo na iyun, yung Reming, dun na kami sa center binagyuhan,” said 73-year-old Angelica Balaoro.
Almost 200 families are now staying at a multipurpose building in the village.
They need emergency supplies, according to a local leader.
“Marami ang kailangan kasi, lalo pag ganitong evacuate, yung mga higaan nila… saka yung pagkain,” said barangay chairperson Melba Balea.
Residents of barangay Tambongon in Bacacay town, meanwhile, have no evacuation center that they can use.
A public elementary school and a chapel that should have been designated as emergency evacuation centers are located near recent landslides.
