SMB spanks Ginebra, takes 2-0 advantage

MANILA, Philippines — San Miguel Beer’s offensive firepower was too much for Barangay Ginebra as it scored a 108-102 win in Game 2 of their best-of-seven semifinal series in the PBA Philippine Cup Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Games Sunday (Araneta Coliseum)

4 p.m. — Talk 'N Text vs B-Meg Derby Ace (Game 4)

6:30 p.m. — San Miguel Beer vs Barangay Ginebra (Game 3)

Wingman Anthony Jay Washington tied his career-high 29 points with nine rebounds, and ace shooting guard Dondon Hontiveros also had 29, a personal conference-high, as the Beermen took a 2-0 lead in the series.

SMB used a big run bridging the late part of the third period when Hontiveros completed a three-point play and then Olsen Racela – turning back the hands of time – nailed a three-pointer at midcourt to end the quarter.

That gave the Beermen a 72-70 advantage going into the final frame, where Washington starred in a 20-11 run, igniting it with a jumper and then capping it with a triple for a 92-81 advantage with 6:12 to play.

However, like in the series-opener and in their two games in the elimination phase, the Kings fought back.

Guards Willie Miller, Jayjay Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa joined hands with forward JC Intal, whose trey made it 102-105 with 9.3 seconds left. Washington split his free throws in the next play, 106-102, with 8.1 ticks to go.

The Kings had a chance to move closer, but Miller missed his three-pointer and Hontiveros grabbed the rebound and got a foul from Hatfield.

Hontiveros closed out scoring by making the two freebies.

“Before the game, I told the players that winning Game 2 is the key to enter the Finals,” SMB rookie mentor Ato Agustin said.

“They worked hard, especially on defense. Maski naka-habol ang Ginebra hindi nawala ang composure ng mga bata. It’s a win, and give credit to the players, they did their job,” he added.

Even with the victory and a 2-0 lead in the series after winning Game 1 (86-84), Agustin said they’re not thinking of sweeping the series, saying: “We just focus every game, one game at a time.”

Ginebra mentor Jong Uichico remains confident even after the setback, the team’s fourth in as many games opposite his former squad.

“As the players said, we’ve been here before. It’s nothing new to them,” said Uichico. “But we need to work a little bit harder. We have to win the next game, that’s for sure. A must win.”

In the main game, the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters held down James Yap and Peter June Simon of the B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados to score a 92-78 win in Game 3 of their own best-of seven semifinals series, thus gaining a 2-1 edge against the defending champions.

Ryan Reyes, Larry Fonacier, Ali Peek, and Jason Castro spearheaded the charge for the Chot Reyes-mentored squad, which held both Yap and Simon to only two points in the second half to bounce back after a sorry 87-88 loss during Game 2 last Wednesday.
