MANILA, Philippines — Everyone hailed it as a “major, major” move, as if Venus Raj’s slight faux pas at the Miss Universe beauty pageant last year is all she’ll ever be known for. Well, the beauty from Camarines Sur—our reigning Binibining Pilipinas-Universe and 4th Runner-up at the Miss Universe 2010 beauty pageant—is, of course, out to prove to everyone that she’s worth more than the infamous catchphrase.
Something important has indeed happened to Venus Raj’s local career, and it starts with her signing an exclusive contract with ABS-CBN on Jan. 14. As a new Kapamilya talent, Raj expressed being “extremely honored to become part of the country’s biggest network.”
This effectively puts a stop to any negotiations with another network, with Raj revealing there was indeed an offer from Willie Revillame to be part of his show on TV5. Together with her polite decline to his offer, she also informed them that all her decisions would have to be in conjunction with those of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPIC), which manages her career.
Raj’s contract signing with ABS-CBN—which, according to PUSH.com.ph, the beauty queen reportedly only found out the night before the negotiations have been finalized—comes with a renewed partnership between BPIC and ABS-CBN. Apparently, it has been about 13 years since the two entities have been affiliated.
With its five-year partnership contract, the network will be airing what is said to be “the most prestigious contest in the land.” The pageant has been hosted by GMA-7 for years, but following this new alignment, the Kapamilya network will be airing the Binibining Pilipinas pageant this year in March, as well as the Miss Universe Pageant to be held in Sao Paolo, Brazil in September. This airing will likewise push the Binibining Pilipinas pageant to be more known world-wide, as viewers all over the world can now watch it through The Filipino Channel (TFC).
Present at the contract signing were ABS-CBN COO Charo Santos-Concio, Channel Head Cory Vidanes and head of TV Entertainment Production, Linggit Tan.
Aside from Raj, BPCI was represented by Chairperson MS. Stella Marquez-Araneta, executive board members Conchitina Bernardo and Pitoy Moreno, and Director for Marketing, Sienna Olaso.
“Alam ko naman na nandiyan 'yung tiwala ng Binibing Pilipinas sa ABS-CBN and ganu'n din naman kayo sa amin,” Raj told “TV Patrol” after the contract signing. “Actually matagal ko na rin inaantay na magkaroon talaga ng tahanan and I think this would be the best time para magsimula na rin ako at ang Binibing Pilipinas sa mga… tatahakin namin. Maraming salamat. Hindi po kayo nagkamali at hindi rin ako nagkamali sa pagpili sa inyo.”
Raj also refuted any problem with Revillame with regards to this new development. “Hindi ko rin naman talaga siya nakikita ng personal at nakakausap so feeling ko wala naman,” she told PUSH.com.ph.
She added that he had picked a good co-host and also immediately shot down any notion that Revillame tried to make a move on her. “Hindi naman, grabe naman yun. Nagkita lang kami, nagkausap, ganun lang. Wala naman sigurong ample time para magligawan,” she insisted in the same interview.
Apparently, Raj will first try her luck at singing. She will be joining Christian Bautista in a Valentine show called “My Beautiful Girls” at Resorts World alongside Binibining Pilipinas-International Krista Kleiner and the show girls of the musicale “Kaos.”
Raj has expressed interest in appearing in a dramatic role, but says she would leave it to ABS-CBN to fashion her career as they see fit.
Raj also recently made it to the “People of the Year” list of a local magazine, a distinction she shares with the likes of singer/composer Ryan Cayabyab, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, architect Felino Palafix Jr., Tuloy Foundation’s Fr. Rocky Evangelista, PAL President and CEO Jaime Bautista, YES Pinoy Foundation founder Dingdong Dantes, and broadcast journalist Mike Enriquez.
