MANILA, Philippines - Here's a tip to pedestrians who text while walking: stop, look and listen when crossing a road.
Edcel Mallaca, 17-year-old of Molo district in Iloilo City, dared to cross the street in Plazoletagay area in downtown Iloilo while texting on Tuesday night.
Since she was too busy with her mobile phone, a passenger jeep ran over Mallaca's foot at the area's rotunda.
Jeepney driver Danilo Pineda said he honked his horn several times to get Mallaca's attention, but she didn't hear the warnings.
"Bumusina ako ng ilang beses, kaya lang nagte-text siya kaya siguro hindi niya napansin na may paparating na sasakyan," Danilo Pineda, a jeepney driver, told ABS-CBN News.
The city's response team rushed to the victim and brought her to the nearest hospital.
City traffic enforcers said that incident should serve as a lesson to those who text while walking, including drivers of public utility vehicles.
