The Manny Pacquiao bob: Is it Beiber, Beatles or Bruce inspired?

MANILA, Philippines - Apart from Manny Pacquiao’s dinner with US President Barack Obama and the boxer's upcoming fight with Sugar Shane Mosley, another topic about the Filipino champ has been, well, in the fringes of talk: His hairstyle.

Many associate the boxer-congressman’s new bushy 'do with that of tween sensation Justin Bieber, who has set off a trend of the combed-over hair. Although it is unclear whether Pacquiao is a Bieber fan, Michael Marley of Examiner.com wrote that the pound-per-pound king’s new hair style is a tribute to the “Baby” singer.

"I've been told by insiders now that Pacman's coiff is actually his personal tribute to teen idol Justin Beiber," he stated in his article.

He further theorized that Pacquiao’s adviser, Michael Koncz, might have something to do with it too. "Bieber, who draws squeals from females of all ages, is a Canadian which makes me suspect fellow Canadian and Pacquiao uber agent Michael Koncz is in the middle of all this," said Marley.

In an interview with FanHouse during a press conference held at the Beverly Hill Hotel in Los Angeles last Feb. 12, Pacman simply laughed when the reporter remarked about his "Bieber” bob.

Coincidentally, Pacquiao might share more than similar hairstyles with Bieber. The pound-per-pound king is considering playing at the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) All-Star Game on Feb. 18 in which Bieber will also participate.

Marley also observed that Pacquiao’s hair is reminiscent of The Beatles' mop top look.

"I don't see how we can all survive the boredom unless somebody comes along to put something spicy into the mix beyond Pacquiao's coiffure making him the Pinoy Fifth Beatle," he wrote.

Meanwhile, during a pre-meet-and-greet short press con at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Pacquiao seemed to have intimated that his inspiration for growing his hair is The Beatles.

“I like the Beatles look,” he said in jest, adding that he has not made up mind yet as to when he will get a haircut.

The Saranggani congressman, however, sang a different tune in a separate interview with the Los Angeles Times. “Bruce Lee is my idol,” he said of the inspiration behind “the mushrooming poof of black hair sprouting from his head.”

Other celebrities have sported unique hairstyles in the past that ignited quite a “hair-y” revolution. These include Demi Moore’s short, cropped hair in “Ghost,” Marilyn Monroe’s trademark blonde curls, one-fifth Spice Girls-turned-fashion icon Victoria Beckham’s asymmetrical cut, and Guns ‘N Roses’ Slash’s long, rock star hair.

Recently, meanwhile, “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson’s “just rolled out of bed” hair and “Gossip Girl” lead actress Blake Lively’s long tresses have reportedly sent many to salons to get the same looks.
