MANILA, Philippines – Brothers James and Rudolf Obeso, more famously known as the duo Moymoy Palaboy, avoid being too chummy with young teenage girls.
The duo admits this has been their rule since they got “traumatized” by the incident involving their friend, actor Aljur Abrenica, who, in 2009, was charged with “acts of lasciviousness” [since dismissed] by a 15-year old girl he met in a gig in Puerto Galera, Mindoro.
The Obeso brothers, who were with Abrenica that time, recalled what transpired.
"Hindi naman talaga totoo yun," said Rudolf. "Nandoon kami no'ng time na yun, kami-kami ang magkakasama. Ako pa yung nagyaya sa girl na 'sama ka sa amin, dito kami, e.'
"Kasi friendship lang naman. Friendly rin naman si Aljur. Usap-usap lang naman kami doon, pabilog lang yun. Kaya imposibleng may mangyaring touching doon. Wala talaga. Tapos, naghiwa-hiwalay na kami."
"Ako pa ang naghatid doon,” James said, adding in seeming jest, "Baka akala niya ako si Aljur."
According to the brothers, the incident strengthened their friendship with Abrenica.
James said, "Hanggang ngayon nagkikita-kita kami, pumupunta sa bahay. Busy lang si mokong sa 'Machete' ngayon."
Given their being buddies, it is a wonder the duo didn't insinuate themselves to form part of Abrenica’s blossoming career specifically by snagging roles in the successful series.
But James chimed, "Wala siyang power!"
Lest he's misconstrued, James added, "Hindi, mahirap kasi dahil duo kami. Hahanapan ka ng role na pupuwede sa aming dalawa. Unlike solo, kahit anong role, puwede."
Apparently, the duo thinks it detrimental that they are known to work solely as a team that's why they plan to accept projects outside Moymoy Palaboy.
"Merong gano'n, may time na gano'n. Kailangan din naming mag-explore. Kasi tagal na rin, e. Naka-lock in na kami sa Moymoy Palaboy, three years, four years na rin. [Kaya] kung may chance na may offer na individual [act], okey lang,” James explained.
