MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippines will join the rest of the world in the annual observance of Earth Hour Saturday, in which lights will be switched off for one hour simultaneously with 131 countries and 4, 616 cities and towns around the world.
In Makati City, Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay will lead the countdown together with city officials, executives from the business sector and members of the diplomatic corps in a ceremonial countdown at the Ayala Triangle Gardens starting at 7p.m.
“We expect a bigger turnout at the countdown this Saturday than the previous years. The horrific tragedy in Japan has increased public awareness about the urgency of taking proactive steps to combat global warming, which experts point to as the main cause of the extreme weather phenomena all over the world,” Mayor Binay said.
Before the countdown, there will be an open painting session at 5 p.m. at the Ayala Triangle Gardens where anyone can join a group of painters in making a creative portrayal of Earth Hour that will be unveiled after the said ceremony.
Participants, including local and international environmental groups, will converge at the said park for the countdown program at 7 p.m. At 8:30 pm, all lights from the business districts, households, schools both private and public and government offices will be switched off.
In Caloocan City, Mayor Recom Echiverri has appealed to city residents including businessmen to fully support “Earth Hour” today to show our solidarity to the world in mitigating the effects of the problem of global warming.
"By simple act of turning off the lights and all electronic appliances for one hour between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. we are already helping solve the problem caused by the warmer climate that the earth is experiencing," he said.
Pasay City Mayor Antonino Calixto said that the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWFN) has been advocating ways and means to preserve the present state of our environment.
