Traffic at the Mabuhay Rotonda at the boundary of Manila and Quezon City was snarled as a protest caravan led by militant transport groups reached the area before noon Thursday.

Organizers claimed some 500 vehicles had joined the marching participants who were protesting recent fuel price hikes, radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported.

Militant transport groups led by the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON) started their caravan from the Quezon Memorial Circle and passed through Quezon Avenue.

The caravan is to proceed to the University of Santo Tomas area, after which the protesters will march to Mendiola Bridge near MalacaƱang.

On the other hand, teams from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and Metro Manila police kept watch over the caravan to make sure the protest action will be orderly and peaceful.

Earlier, the MMDA said it will deploy buses and trucks to give free rides to commuters who may be stranded due to the activity.
