Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara as the new bishop of the Diocese of Pasig, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said on Thursday.
The CBCP said Vergara, 48, will take over the post left vacant by Bishop Emeritus Francisco San Diego, who retired December 23 last year.
“As bishop of Pasig, Vergara will lead a territory of 78 sq km and a Catholic population of 1,143,000," the CBCP said in its news site.
The CBCP described Vergara as a native of Manila who was born on October 23, 1962.
Vergara finished his studies at the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in B.S. Management in Engineering and Masters in Philosophy.
He took his Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the Loyola School of Theology and finished his Doctorate in Sacred Theology at the University of Santo Tomas.
After his ordination to the priesthood on March 24, 1990, he was appointed Dean of Studies and Professor of Philosophy at the Holy Apostles Seminary at EDSA, Guadalupe, Makati City.
He also served as Rector of the same seminary from 1994 until 2001, while serving as a member of the Presbyteral Council and head Chaplain of associations.
Vergara’s other pastoral assignments include:
- Parochial vicar of the Parish of St. Andrew the Apostle;
- Parish priest of the Santa Rita de Cascia Parish, Philamlife Homes, Quezon City from 2001 to 2004;
- President of Radio Veritas Global Broadcasting System in 2002; and
- Chancellor of the New Diocese of Cubao in 2003.
Vergara was appointed Parish Priest of the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City in 2004.
In February 2005, the Vatican appointed him bishop of San Jose, Nueva Ecija.
