MANILA, Philippines – Top-rating primetime Kapamilya soap “Mara Clara” picked up a 2011 Banff World Media Festival – also known as the Rockies – nomination over the weekend, reported Banffmediafestival.com.
The drama serial remake competes for Best Soap Opera/Telenovela category alongside South Korea’s “Bread, Love and Dreams” (“Baker King” also aired on GMA-7), UK’s “Coronation Street,” USA’s “Days of Our Lives,” “Eva Luna” and “The Queen of the South.”
The Best Soap Opera/Telenovela category falls under The Fiction Rockies bracket which will announce winners June 12 (June 13 in Manila) at the AOL Canada Theater.
“Hosted by ‘Entertainment Tonight Canada’ Hollywood Correspondent Matte Babel, the Fiction Rockies ceremony will recognize the very best in scripted television programming from around the world,” read the announcement posted on the said website.
The Banff World Media Awards “are an internationally-recognized awards program celebrating the very best in international television and digital media production.”
Although the Fiction Rockies are dominated by western entries, Japan’s “Neighbors” hauled a nod for the Best Animation Program.
“Mara Clara” has lorded over local primetime ratings since it premiered in 2010 prompting Star Cinema to green light a film version starring the drama’s young lead cast Julia Montes and Kathryn Bernardo.
According to abs-cbnnews.com, the movie to be helmed by Cathy Garcia-Molina is currently in its early development following initial story conference in March.
Julia Montes recently said to the Kapamilya news website: “Kami ni Kathryn sobrang nagpapasalamat dahil nagbunga po yung hardwork ng buong team ng ‘Mara Clara.’ Although mas malaki ang expectations ng tao kasi movie na ‘yon so may pressure pero mas nangingibabaw ‘yong gratitude and excitement namin.”
