MANILA, Philippines – The Quiapo market has been named by the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) Annual Report as among the world’s most notorious markets.

Quiapo made it on the list because of the rampant sale of pirated goods, particularly CD and DVD copies of movies and licensed software.

The report said the other notorious markets are the Bahia Market (Guayaquil, Ecuador), China Small Commodities Market (Yiwu, China), Ciudad del Este (Paraguay), Harco Glodok (Jakarta, Indonesia), La Salada (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Ladies Market (Mongkok, Hong Kong), Luowu Market (Shenzhen, China), Nehru Place (New Delhi, India); PC Malls (China), Petrivka Market (Kyiv, Ukraine), Red Zones (Thailand), San Andresitos (Colombia), Savelovskiy Market (Moscow, Russia), Silk Market (Beijing, China), Tepito (Mexico City) and Urdu Bazaars (Pakistan).

The listing prompted the Optical Media Board (OMB) and the Manila Police District to launch another raid in Quiapo, particularly shops along Hidalgo and Arlegui streets.

OMB chairman Ronnie Ricketts took part in the raid on Tuesday.

However, authorities found Hidalgo stalls closed when they arrived.

Some pirated CD and DVD vendors, meanwhile, were nabbed along Arlegui.

Police and OMB officers also managed to confiscate sacks filled with the illegal goods.

Ricketts said they will continue to launch raids in Quiapo to end the trade in pirated items.
