Despite being suspended after one of its buses caused an accident that killed journalist-professor Lourdes “Chit" Estella-Simbulan in Quezon City on Friday, a bus firm was caught still plying its routes on Monday.
At least four units of the Universal Guiding Star bus line were intercepted along the southbound part of Commonwealth Avenue before 8:00 a.m. on Monday.
“May instruction sa amin si Chairman (Francis Tolentino), ang Universal Guiding Star ay hindi po,"a Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic aide who flagged down two buses said in an interview on dzBB radio.
The report said the passengers of the buses were told to get off and the drivers were given traffic violation tickets.
A separate report by dzBB’s Allan Gatus said one of the apprehended drivers claimed that their operation manager allowed them to ply their routes because the company has not yet received a copy of the suspension order.
The report also said Daniel Espinosa, the driver of the bus in Friday’s accident that killed Simbulan has yet to show up.
Espinosa fled the scene after ramming the taxi that Simbulan was riding.
“Tinatanong ko saan ang driver, di na raw nagpakita," the MMDA traffic aide said.
The initial police investigation showed that Simbulan was instantly killed after the taxi she was riding was nicked on the side by a bus before being rammed from behind by a Universal Guiding Star bus.
The police suspect the drivers of the two buses involved in the accident were racing against each other.
