MANILA, Philippines - Former Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) chairman Ephraim Genuino is seeking almost P20-million worth of retirement benefits from the state-owned gaming firm.
In a June 10 letter to current PAGCOR chief Bong Naguiat, Genuino said the gaming agency should pay up as he has already submitted all the requirements, including a clearance from the Office of the Ombudsman.
Genuino added that he has been waiting for the payment for a year since he stepped down from his post.
He resigned last year as the term of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ended. Genuino spent 10 years at PAGCOR.
Naguiat, however, said Genuino may not get his retirement benefits because of anomalies during his term.
Genuino sent his demand letter 3 days before he was charged with graft and malversation for the alleged misuse of more than P26 million in PAGCOR funds in the 2008 film "Baler."
He is also in hot water over a questionable food purchase using PAGCOR funds.
"It's a long process really. Atsaka alam namin may mga kaso rin kaya hino-hold namin ang mga benefits nila," Naguiat said.
He added that Genuino is also asking too much in retirement benefits.
"Kung hindi ako nagkakamali, aabutin ito ng P20 million eh," he said.
He clarified that they are not targetting Genuino because the benefits of other former PAGCOR officials have yet to be released.
ABS-CBN News tried to get Genuino's side on the issue but he has not replied to phone calls.
