Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago and husband, former Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Narciso Santiago, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday by renewing their vows.
“I feel very sexy," said Santiago, who was clad in a red Inno Sotto gown, in an interview aired over GMA News’ “24 Oras: Weekend Edition."
Santiago said she was glad that a lot of her invited guests — which included politicians, celebrities, businessmen and two past presidents — were able to come to the Manila Cathedral despite the inclement weather.
“I’m very, very glad. It shows you the sense of discipline that informs the lives of my visitors. Even with the bad weather, they have come because they have committed to come," she said.
Among the personalities who served as principal sponsors during the wedding were former President Joseph Estrada, former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Chief Justice Renato Corona, former First Lady and incumbent Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos, and GMA Network chairman and chief executive officer Felipe Gozon.
Arroyo conspicuously wore a neck brace during the wedding after she was hospitalized on Thursday due to cervical radiculopathy, or more commonly known as a pinched nerve.
President Benigno Aquino III, meanwhile, served as the best man during the couple’s renewal of vows. Aquino’s father, the slain Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., served as a principal sponsor of the Santiago couple in their wedding in 1971.
Other personalities present during the event were Vice President Jejomar Binay, incoming Transportation and Communications chief Manuel “Mar" Roxas II and wife, media personality Korina Sanchez, businessman Manny Pangilinan, Senator Manuel Villar Jr. and wife Cynthia, business tycoon Eduardo “Danding" Cojuangco Jr. and Dr. Emilio Yap of Manila Bulletin.
