Palace clarifies June holidays

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang on Friday clarified that the Independence Day holiday will be observed on Sunday, June 12, which means work and classes will go on as usual on Monday, June 13.

Malacañang, via the Official Gazette (www.gov.ph and twitter.com/govph), clarified that Monday, June 13, will be a normal working day.

The Aquino administration has discontinued the "holiday economics" system implemented by the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, where if holidays fall on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), the Monday nearest to the date becomes a non-working holiday.

The Arroyo administration implemented this strategy in hopes of boosting local tourism during long weekends created by the additional non-working days.

Meanwhile, the Palace also said that June 20 will be a non-working holiday, in commemoration of the 150th birthday of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal, as per Proclamation No. 154, s, 2011.

Rizal's birthday will be observed on Sunday, June 19, but the proclamation moved the non-working day to the following day, as per request by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
