MANILA, Philippines — Nearly P320 million in charity funds of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office have reportedly been allocated by the past PCSO officials for medical expenses of “ghost” patients.
This discovery by the incumbent PCSO management was revealed to media Thursday as officials vowed to press criminal charges against hospitals and former officials of the agency believed to be involved in the anomaly.
At Thursday’s Usaping Balita News Forum in Serye Cafe, Quezon City, PCSO board member Mabel Mamba disclosed that they discovered 17 boxes of “guarantee letters” that contained “non-existent” as recipients of financial assistance for various medical expenses.
Mamba said the boxes were discovered in the office of a former management official who has also been given the authority to distribute charity funds and financial assistance without approval of the board of directors of the state-run lottery agency.
“Those involved (in the anomaly) will be charged soon, we are gathering more evidence to pin them down,” Mamba told reporters during the Usaping Balita News Forum.
A number of fund irregularities have started coming out in the open since the takeover of the new PCSO management led by Chairperson Margie Juico.
Mamba said the PCSO had filed criminal charges for a multi-million advertising irregularity involving the head of the information and promotion department of the PCSO.
