Cloudy skies and rainy weather are expected to temper celebrations over parts of the country on the first day of 2012, state weather forecasters said on Wednesday.

In an interview over radio dzBB, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecaster Bernard Punzalan said the rains will be triggered by the northeast monsoon, a seasonal wind system that affects the country at this time of the year.

PAGASA's extended forecast for the next five days — up to January 1 — indicated the weather in Metro Manila will be partly cloudy with isolated rain showers.

The temperature range is expected to be within 23 to 31 degrees Celsius.

Legazpi City in Albay and Puerto Princesa City in Palawan, both major tourist destinations, will also have cloudy weather with isolated thunderstorms.

Major cities in the Visayas and Mindanao including Iloilo, Bacolod, Metro Cebu, Tacloban, Cagayan de Oro, Metro Davao and Zamboanga City may have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.
