Derek, Angelica Recall How It All Started

MANILA, Philippines — Interviewing reel and real life sweethearts Derek Ramsay and Angelica Panganiban was like watching the Porkchop Duo or a stand-up comic pair.

Here’s why…

Giselle: So how did the two of you meet?

Angel: Babe, ito yung topic natin last night. Si Derek na lang magkukuwento.

Derek: Naku, baka mag-away tayo.

Angel: Sige na.

Derek: Angel and I met through a common friend, Direk Ga. It was those idle times during taping and Direk Ga was talking to Angel. Being my makulit self, I grabbed the phone not knowing who was on the other line. I found out I was talking to a girl who was in the crapper!

Giselle: Are you sure you want me to print that?

Derek: Yeah, print it!

Angel: Di naman talaga noh. Ang kulit niya kasi, ayaw niya kasi sabihin kung sino siya kaya sabi ko tumatae ako. Ang kulit kasi eh. ‘Saan ka? Ano ginagawa mo?’ Kaya sabi ko tumatae ako, malay ko ba na siya ang kausap ko. Pero ang totoo nag-be-bake talaga ako nung panahon na iyun. Siguro naaliw siya kasi ganoon ako makipag-usap sa kanya.

Derek: Who cooks and shits at the same time? That’s so hygienic.

Everybody laughs.

Angel: Tumatak na iyun sa isip niya forever.

Giselle: When you first spoke with Angel on the phone, did you have crush on her already?

Derek: I did not know who she was.

Angel: Nag-pre-pretend siya nun.

Derek: How can I pretend if I don’t know who you were?

Angel: Unang beses ko pumunta sa bahay may mga magazines siya na cover ako.

Derek: I had to know who I was going to meet.

Angel: Lumang magazines. September kami nag-meet, March yung issue.

Derek: I didn’t really know it was you on the magazine. I only realized after we met. Aaminin ko naman kung kilala kita. Kapal at haba ng buhok mo ha!

Angel: Nakita ko yung mga magazines, at sa CR pa niya. Habang nagwiwiwi ako sabi ko sa sarili ko, ‘OMG! Bakit may mga picture ako dito na nakahubad!’

Giselle to herself: Hmmmm Angelica is implying something naughty. Let’s see if the man will take the bait.

Derek: Excuse me, I bought those for the articles inside!

Giselle to herself: And the fish took the bait… Tsk, tsk Derek! Shame on you!

Angel: Pinagnasaan na niya ako, hindi niya alam.

Everybody laughs.

Giselle: So, what happened next?

Derek: We all decided to meet up. At first I thought she was mataray.

Giselle: And how about you, Angel? Was it love at first sight?

Angel: Ganito na lang, may ‘MMK’ kami dapat, tapos siya yung leading man ko. Hinindian ko yung project kasi sabi ko, ‘Ha Derek Ramsay? Ang tanda!’

Giselle: What is your age gap?

Angel: 10 years

Derek: 8 lang!

Angel: Hindi ko talaga tinanggap yung project eew!

Derek: Hindi ko rin tinanggap, yuck!

Angel: Tinanggap niya! Hinahanap niya ako sa set hindi ako ang nakita niya.

Derek: She wishes.

Reality check: You are reading about two people who have been madly in love with each other for five years already.

Giselle: So, when you guys finally met, what was your reaction?

Angel: Pagkakita ko sa kanya, naka-shorts siya, naka-T-shirt na maayos, naka-cap.

Derek: That was my frisbee gear. Ang dungis ko at ang dumi ko, kita mo kahit madumi ako, in love ka pa rin sa akin.

Angel: Na-guapuhan ako sa kanya, after three days.

Derek: Kaya pala nung in-invite ka namin that same night, sumama ka kaagad.

Angel: Sumama naman ako pero naka pambahay lang ako – malaking T-shirt, shorts.

Giselle: And how about you Derek, what was your first impression?

Derek: Nothing really, it was more of let’s enjoy this night and have fun and we did.

Giselle: So, when did you realize that you wanted to court Angelica and have a relationship with her?

Derek: One year din, bago ko sinabi, sige na nga.

Angel: One year niya akong pinag-isipan.

Everyone laughs again.

Angel: More of buddies kami na may kilig factor noon.

Giselle: So, friends who had a crush on each other?

Angel: Alam ko talaga na crush niya ako.

Derek: (Rolls his eyes) That’s what she tells herself. Ok, sige na para masaya ka na.

Angel: Babe, aminin mo na crush mo ko.

Derek: Ok crush na crush kita, sobra.

Giselle: How did this “crush thing” evolve?

Angel: Magkatabi kami tapos tine-text niya ako na pumunta ako sa taping niya. Sabi niya dalawin mo ako sa set ko. Ay, grabe talaga yung moment na yun. Magkatabi kami nun, skin to skin. Ano ito? Tine-text niya ako. Tapos na-realize ko na masarap pala yung skin niya.

Derek: That doesn’t sound right.

Giselle: Did you like Angelica because she was different from the other girls you dated?

Derek: Angel is very, very different from the other girls. And she showed me a different world, binisita ko pa siya sa Tondo. We came from different worlds but we share a lot of values, like how she values her friends just like I do.

Awwww. I project wedding bells for these two in the next three years...
