Fire broke out beneath one of the coaches of a northbound Metro Rail Transit train at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday near the Kamuning Station in Quezon City, prompting passengers to scramble for the exits – two women were injured in the jostle.
Minutes after the incident, however, operations at the GMA-Kamuning Station were back to normal, an MRT official said. Those injured were brought to the East Avenue Medical Center at around 4:30 p.m. after getting first aid treatment at the train station. SF01 Florendino Batain of the Bureau of Fire Protection said:
"One of the passengers got scratches on one of her elbows, while the other sustained scratches on both knees." In a phone interview with GMA News Online, MRT spokesperson Frency Senolos confirmed that two people were injured in the incident, but the evacuation of the passengers was "generally okay."
She said the fire was due to a "technical failure" that occurred when the train was approaching the GMA-Kamuning Station. Also, she said the train in the incident is subject to investigation.
