Cotto, who lost on a 12-round stoppage to Pacquiao in November 2009, doesn’t know exactly when that happens but is convinced he can exact payback.
“Well, you know I have a new trainer, Emanuel Steward. I know with all his instruction and boxing knowledge, we would have a better fight and we would win the fight,” Cotto told fightnews.
When he faced Pacquiao, Cotto had to rely on Joe Santiago, who didn’t have enough experience in cornerwork and faltered in the process.
If Pacquiao has Freddie Roach, Cotto has Steward, renowned for his long-time association with Thomas Hearns and later with former undisputed world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis.
Cotto is positive he can do much better with Steward training him and calling the shots in the corner.
But as to when a rematch with Pacquiao would happen is still up in the air, something that can be determined later in theyear or perhaps sometime next year after he and Pacquiao fulfill some of their commitments against separate foes.
Pacquiao is booked to meet Shane Mosley on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, while Cotto is set to square off with Ricardo Mayorga sometime on March 12 also at the MGM Grand.
