Pacquiao, Mosley head for high-altitude training

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley are both heading to the mountains for high-altitude training as they rev up for their May 7 world welterweight title clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao is setting up camp in Baguio City sometime in the second or even third week of March while Mosley is kicking off his own build-up at around the same time as well in Big Bear, California.

Big Bear is a resort town in the San Bernardino mountains of Southern California that is 88 miles (141 kilometers) from downtown Los Angeles.

While Baguio has an elevation of 5,100 feet, Big Bear is even higher at 7,000 feet although there are certain areas in the scenic mountain range that can reach up to 9,000 feet above sea level.

Big Bear has been Mosley’s training headquarters since 1996 and he will tag along what he labels as his ‘‘tribe” there in March in what will go down as the biggest fight of his stellar career.

Mosley, who is turning 40 in September, is expected to sign up several southpaw sparring partners so he could study the fighting style of a lefty like Pacquiao with the help of chief trainer Naazim Richardson.

Mosley has gotten accustomed to the tranquil surroundings in Big Bear that he has a home there that also plays host to his training team when he is preparing for a fight.

But before the two punchers report for training camp, Pacquiao and Mosley are going to size each other up during a five-city promotional tour that begins Feb. 10 in Los Angeles with succeeding stops in Las Vegas, New York, Washington and San Francisco.

Mosley is a heavy underdog but the durable fighter from Pomona, California, insists he still has a lot of championship juice left in the tank.

Speed and power, Mosley said, will be his best weapons against the rampaging Pacquiao, who has been on a roll ever since he made a smashing US debut more than ten years ago.
