Hall of Famer Efren “Bata” Reyes and his partner, former world champion Francisco “Django” Bustamante, barged their way into the quarterfinal round of the World Cup of Pool Thursday night at Robinsons Place Manila.
Up against a crack Canadian pair in Alex Pagulayan and John Morra, Reyes and Bustamante shook off a slow start to turn back their rivals and win, 8-5.
The Filipinos, who are two-time champions of this event, trailed 2-4 early, but an unforced error in the eighth rack from Pagulayan, a Filipino-Canadian player who chose to represent Canada, enabled Reyes and Bustamante to get back and complete a two-rack run.
They then won four of the next five racks to complete a come-from-behind win.
The win by Reyes and Bustamante eased the pain of the loss of another Filipino team, Dennis Orcullo and Lee Van Cortez, who were knocked out of the competition on Wednesday.
