Mindanaoan Films Recognized At Cinemanila 2012

MANILA, Philippines – Two films by Mindanaoan directors were recognized at the 14th Cinemanila International Film Festival held recently at the Bonifacio High Street Central Ampitheater in Taguig City.
Gawad Urian and Palanca awardee Arnel Mardoquio’s submission,

“Ang Paglalakbay Ng Mga Bituin Sa Gabing Madilim,” won the Grand Jury Prize under the Digital Lokal section of the festival. Boldly highlighting the many faces of the Bangsamoro struggle in Mindanao, “Ang Paglalakbay” also won the Jury Prize at the recently concluded Cinema One Originals 2012.

Teng Mangansakan II’s “The Obscured Histories And Silent Longings Of Daguluan’s Children” bagged the Lino Grand Prize as well as the Best Director trophy. The film centers on the lives of people residing in a remote fishing village in Mindanao “amidst the foreboding of an armed conflict.” Mangansakan is regarded as the trailblazer of digital filmmaking in Mindanao.

Meanwhile, Korea’s “Juvenile Offender” bagged the Lino Brocka Grand Prize as well as the Best Actor award for Seo Young-joo under the International Competition section.
Filmmakers who passed away this year, Marilou Diaz-Abaya, Celso Ad. Castillo, were among the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Grand Jury Prize: “If It’s Not Now, Then When?” (James Lee, Malaysia)

Best Directors: Carlos Reygadas for “Post Tenebras Lux” (Mexico) and Nawopol Thomrangrattanarit for “36” (Thailand)

Best Actress: Oula Hamadeh for “Kayan” (Iran/Canada/Lebanon)

Best Actor: Seo Young-joo for “Juvenile Offender” (Korea)

Digital Lokal

Film International

The Cinemanila was conceived in 1974 by the late National Artist and celebrated filmmaker Lino Brocka as an “independent production outfit.” A film festival was created after it in 1999 with the aim of “nurturing environment for the future of the Filipino film industry” while encouraging the creation of “uniquely Filipino films” of international caliber.
