MANILA, Philippines – Rachel Donaire finally speaks up about allegations that she and her family had caused the deepening feud between her husband, Nonito "The Flash" Donaire, Jr., and his father, Donaire Sr.
In an interview with PEP published Jan. 17, Rachel, who was once featured in FHM magazine, refuted accusations made by his mother-in-law, Imelda Donaire, that she, her family and his famous husband had been “disrespecting” Donaire Sr. in interviews, more so accusing him of “stealing” from Nonito.
Recall that in an interview with boxingnews.com, Imelda was said to have accused his son of lying about his father supposedly stealing money from him.
"Nonito's dad didn't steal any money. The $240 Nonito Jr. accused his dad of stealing from him was used to feed the boxing staff," the article quoted Imelda as saying.
In the same article, Imelda refuted the other claims made by Nonito, whom, she said, painted his family as “poor” like Manny Pacquiao's "with almost nothing to eat, no food at the table, [if having the]smallest share in the table."
Imelda said they were poor but not as poor as his son said.
"There was always food at the table, maybe not [a lot] but [there] was always enough for everybody."
Imelda also belied Nonito's claim that he had been "overlooked" by his parents—especially his dad—preferring his older brother, Glenn, over him.
"I am very sad to read this one, how can he carry this in his heart? If he thinks that he was overlooked he should have shut his mouth. His brother Glenn even supported him because he was not working, he only boxed,” said she.
In the same interview, Imelda cited an instance where Rachel's dad gave the former rules in relation to approaching Nonito.
“She can't go near her son anytime she wants, she can't always ask for something from the son... she can't go in to the ring in case Junjun wins,” the article read.
Imelda also seemingly insinuated that Rachel has been building a wall between Nonito's family and the boxer.
“If Rachel is a good wife, she should teach her husband to respect his parents. But what happened? She tried to pull Nonito Jr. away from his own family,” she said.
Rachel, on the other hand, cited two previously published interviews-- "Nonito Donaire tells the Media: Leave my wife alone" (Boxingscene.com, Nov. 2008) and “Nonito Donaire: the sadness behind the smile” (Boxingnewsonline, Dec. 2010)--on which she grounded her comments.
Rachel told PEP: "Out of all these articles, I don't see disrespect. I see someone crying for his father, hurtfully remembering the times that were 'good.'
“Where the anger and resentment from these articles came from to have them turn around and attack [my husband], is beyond me. And most importantly, I don't see where Nonito accused his father of stealing as Mamang's article suggests.
"In addition, I understand the Filipino culture and how respect for parents is a strong and powerful thing. But if it was that disrespectful, that disgusting, that we are lying enough for Mamang to say something against us, may I present one question:
"If Nonito Donaire Jr, completely and utterly disrespected his father and lied completely about it, can you explain to me why, if it was really what they are accusing, why would the DONAIRE family support his next fight, rolling in 30 plus people deep, in support for JunJun? That support SHOULD make the readers wonder. Why would the Donaire uncles, aunts, and cousins, support Junjun IF these allegations are true? But they are coming because [there are] deeper layers to the story. The ones that has never been heard by the media before.
"But as stated, I will present more facts after the fight [against Fernando "Cuchilito" Montiel, set on Feb 19]."
Rachel maintained that Nonito will only give a statement after the match.
"As much as it is hurting me and my family, I cannot really say anything more on the issue at hand either because I feel like there is a time and place for it, and it's after the Montiel fight," she said.
Donaire's wife appealed for people to reserve their judgments about the issue until then.
"Note though, in my statement, I will not be debating "feelings" of people, ie who is hurt and who is not. I will be presenting hard evidence, and witnesses to the allegations so this is not a back and forth issue.
"Once evidence is presented, then there is no excuses, no lies, just facts."
