Zamboanga 'kid' may turn out to be world's smallest

MANILA, Philippines – A 17-year-old young man in Zamboanga del Norte may turn out to be the smallest teenager in the world.

Junrey Balawig, who lives in the municipality of Sindangan, measures up to 23 inches or just the typical size of a 1-year-old boy.

He is the oldest but smallest among 4 siblings.

His mother, Concepcion, said Junrey looked normal when he was born. He, however, stopped growing upon reaching his first birthday.

“Sabi ng doktor, wala silang alam sa ano sa bata eh. Tapos binigyan kami ng reseta, pang vitamins daw ito sa buto niya. Tapos naubusan na kami ng dalawang bote, wala pang epek,” said Concepcion.

Aside from his height problem, Junrey also suffers from a stunted speech development. He only manages to say a few words.

Korina Sanchez’s Rated K has pledged to bring Junrey to specialists to shed light on his condition.

Based on the Guinness Book of Records, the smallest man in the world is 24-year-old Niño Hernandez of Colombia.

He stands at 27 inches.
