P.C.F marks 50th year


MANILA, Philippines — The Pontificio Collegio Filippino (PCF), the official residence for Filipino priests doing further studies in Rome, Italy, celebrates its golden(50th) anniversary this year.

Formally established as an institution with pontifical rights by Pope Blessed John XXIII on June 29, 1961, the PCF is under the auspices of the Episcopal Commission on Pontificio Collegio Filippino of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

Its rector is Fr. Gregory Ramon Gaston, formerly of the Holy Apostles Seniors Seminary in Makati City.

The PCF provided lodging to the first two batches of Filipino bishops who were in Rome recently for their ad limina(consultation) visit to the Pope.

During a recent visit to the PCF as one of the highlights of its golden jubilee celebration, Pope Benedict XVI, urged the Filipino student-priests “to grow in faith as they prepare for their future ministries.” (Christina I. Hermoso)

Peacekeeping proceeds
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has started to process remitting to the National Treasury all proceeds from the country's participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations.

In a statement, the DFA said that it has instructed the Philippine Mission to the United Nations and the Philippine Consulate General in New York to ensure the remittance to the National Treasury of all peacekeeping payments from the UN.

DFA Assistant Secretary Leslie Gatan of the Office of United Nations and Other International Organizations said the move is in line with earlier recommendations for the transfer of all UN peacekeeping funds to the National Treasury as called for under Executive Order 338. (Roy C. Mabasa)

36 persons rescued
A distressed motor boat carrying 36 persons were rescued Friday, some 45 nautical miles southeast of Puerto Princesa City in Palawan.

Lieutenant Commander Armando Balilo, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Public Affairs said that 24 passengers and 12 crew members of motorboat M/B Jokshan which was reported in distress after suffering an engine trouble while transiting on its way to Puerto Princesa last Thursday morning was rescued by a transiting fishing vessel identified as F/B Queevee around 9:30 a.m.Friday. B.I.R. tax campaign
The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) joined the nation Friday in celebrating "People Power" by launching a tax campaign in Makati City where it will be getting the bulk of its P940 billion collection goal for the year.

BIR Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto Henares appealed to a large crowd of business executives and their accountants to pay correct taxes to regain the spirit of the popular uprising that took place 25 years ago. (Jun Ramirez)

Anti-cable theft measure
A bill imposing stiffer penalties against pilferage, theft and unauthorized use of cable television and Internet connections has been approved for plenary deliberation in the House of Representatives.

The House committee on information communications Technology has approved House Bill No. 709 that penalizes individuals culpable of the crime of illegal interception or reception of cable television systems and other networks with imprisonment of not more than five years.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez also proposed a fine ranging from P50,000 to P100,000 or both when he filed the measure.
