CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao, Philippines (PNA) - The first day of a 10-day special registration of new voters in Maguindanao province was generally peaceful, the military said.
Col. Prudencio Asto, 6th Infantry Division spokesperson, said no untoward incident was reported in all municipalities of Maguindanao where the registration of new voters commenced on Monday.
"Peaceful, and there was no report of violence," Asto said.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) started the Monday registration of new voters and transferees in preparation for the conduct of the regional balloting scheduled in August this year.
Registration of voters is also ongoing in the provinces of Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
Asto said the military has deployed peacekeepers in areas known to be troublesome during election activities such as the registration of new voters.
The list up will end on March 31 with no extension, the Comelec said in a statement.
