PNoy's spokesperson on Archbishop Cruz: 'He’s not a marriage counselor'

MANILA, Philippines – A spokesperson for President Benigno Aquino III has dismissed the remark of retired Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz that the chief executive should not marry.

"While everyone recognizes Archbishop Cruz's credentials as a Canon lawyer, to the best of my knowledge, he is not a marriage counselor. Neither does he have a personal relationship with the President as to make a deductive conclusion regarding his personal life,” read a part of the statement by deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, as quoted by abs-cbnNEWS.com.

More, she deemed that the archbishop’s comments “are increasingly becoming personal, bizarre and unfair.”

Cruz, the judicial vicar of the National Appellate Matrimonial Tribunal of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said in an interview with ANC’s “Headstart” on April 19 that the 51-year-old bachelor leader is too old to tie the knot.

“Happier or not, no more. I'm thinking more about marriage per se. The person is there. But as I said, no. 40 is old,” said he.

The archbishop cited studies made by church courts stating that people who either get married young (20 years old below) or old (40 and above) often have “unstable” marriages.

“The younger part, it's unstable. They are movable. They change. Marriage is a continuity, it's a permanence and easily they change. It doesn't suit their age. But 40 above, marriage is blending. Two in one. Somebody who's 40, 50, 60 cannot blend anymore,” he explained.

He, however, noted that the conclusions are not absolute.

"I'm just saying our statistics is ‘yung mga bata, hindi dapat magpakasal. ‘Yung matatanda hindi rin dapat magpakasal. Baka may exception ha," said Cruz.

There are other factors, he added, as to why PNoy shouldn’t marry. However, Cruz declined to publicize them.

Recall that Cruz had also aired doubt over the possibility of the planned church wedding of Robin Padilla and Mariel Rodriguez, stressing that Padilla's religion, Islam, has principles contrary to that of the Catholic faith.

Meanwhile, a few quarters stood up for PNoy in light of the marriage issue.

For relationship expert Maribel Dionisio, age does not determine one’s readiness in settling down.

"Basta't handa sa papasok na buhay may asawa ang isang tao, ordinaryo man o Pangulo, walang edad na kinakailangan," abs-cbnNEWS.com quoted Dionisio as saying.

Democratic Socialist Women of the Philippines National Chairperson Beth Angsioco somehow echoed Valte’s sentiments.

"Personal na isyu ang pag-aasawa para sa isang tao lalo na para kay Pangulong Noynoy Aquino," she said.

Angsioco also intimated that the Church’s comments about the President’s personal life might have something to do with his backing of the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill, which the religious sect opposes.

PNoy’s love life has been under the microscope as much as his duties as president, with his failed romances having hogged the headlines in the past. After his much-talked about split with Valenzuela councilor and “Willing Willie” co-host Shalani Soledad, PNoy has been linked to celebrity stylist Liz Uy, stockbroker Len Lopez, and most recently, to Singapore-based Channel News Asia reporter Sabrina Chua.
