MANILA, Philippines – "Showtime" host Anne Curtis is set to shock the audience of her film “Nang Tumambad ang Hubad na Katotohanan” in “Kinse” when she screams in one of the scenes, “Gusto kong maghubad!”
Directed by Erik Matti, the film is one of 15 works in the powerful collection of four to six-minute short films on human rights created by ANC together with filmmakers for their crusade against human rights violation. “Kinse” is ANC’s follow-up project to the very successful and controversial film series “amBisyon2010,” which discussed the 10 issues Filipinos should consider in choosing the next leaders of the nation.
Executive producer Patricia Evangelista, who also helmed “amBisyon2010,” shared, “Si Anne Curtis po, is playing a 28-year old girl na nahul[ihan] po ng tatay niya na si Rez Cortez, ng isang script sa kwarto [with a title]‘nang tumambad ang hubad na katotohanan.’ [Nang mahuli siya] and then finally inadmit ni Anne na kinukuha po pala siyang artista so dun po lumabas yung pinaglalaban ni Anne na karapatan niyang maghubad.”
In a video clip shown to the press, Matti said, “I hate it when the movie starts to preach. Naiinis ako. People who want to love differently are slowly shut down. That’s why my choice of the right is the right to live freely.”
In this project, ANC was able to trim 70 aspiring participants into 15 filmmakers which were given the creative freedom to choose which human right to tackle.
“May karapatan po ang bawat film maker namin na pumili ng karapatang gusto nilang gamitin. At si Direk Erik Matti po ay sa sobrang enthusiastic po niya over the topic ay binasa po niya ang buong Universal Declaration of Human Rights and he found a line that says ‘the right to live freely.’
"Feeling po ni Direk Erik, in the Philippines daw, sobrang minimal daw ang karapatan ng mga tao to be different. And Erik Matti being Erik Matti, feels that it manifests best dun sa karapatan mong maghubad kung gusto mong maghubad,” Evangelista pointed out.
While Matti chose the right to live freely, Gawad Urian awardee and one of the 15 directors for “Kinse,” Paolo Villaluna, said, “Actually, kanya kanyang pili. I’m sure yung advocacy naman namin as filmmakers gusto lang namin gawin yung advocacy na yun dahil may personal issue kami sa particular right.”
“Yung akin, pinili ko yung gay rights kasi naniniwala ako na meron pa ring diskriminasyon. Well, right now we accept gays only if they are effeminate, if they’re productive for the family and only if they’re funny,“ Villaluna said.
“We chose filmmakers that we know have advocacies that they themselves were pushing for,” Evangelista rejoined.
Asked about the qualifications they considered in choosing the directors, Evangelista said, “The selection of filmmakers, it was consensus for many things; we have to have it tested. We also offered last year’s list of filmmakers involved in 'Ambisyon2010.'
"At the same time, we also feel there should be room for new voices.
"And as I said earlier it’s also about advocacy.”
While the independent film industry has been open to all kinds of artists, be that from theater or mainstream, many note that indie film directors seem to prefer unorthodox performers.
To which screenwriter and one of “Kinse” directors Jon Red said, “Sometimes may feeling ako na using a masyadong sikat na celebrity might take away certain aspects of the character, because viewers already have a preconception of what an actor is kaya minsan hindi bumabagay. Na malungkot nga kasi hindi naman kasalanan nung actor. May mga ganong situations eh kaya minsan I prefer to get someone unknown para it’s totally fresh para sa manonood. ”
“Kinse” is part of the celebration of ANC's 15th year anniversary. The series will air on the channel on May 23.
