Danny Floro cup slated Thursday

MANILA, Philippines — The late sportsman and philanthropist Danny Floro will be honored by the Alabang Senior Golfers Association in its monthly golf tournament Thursday at the Alabang Country Club.

Dubbed as the Danny Floro Cup, the 18-hole event will feature members of the ASGA playing with specially invited friends of Floro including media personalities and those from the corporate sector.

A Club Car at stake as a hole-in-one prize on the eighth hole is among the many exciting prizes to be won in the event which will use the PAL points sytem format. Prizes to be disputed are the overall net and overall gross and the top three finishers in Classes A, B and C for Asga members. The champion and runner-up in three classes of the guest division will also be given trophies and prizes.

The awarding of prizes will be held at the ACCI Ballroom B at 5 p.m.

Saulong, Bulilanshine in netfest

Arthur Saulong and Zander Bulilan scored similar hard-earned victories to advance to the second round of the boys’ 14-under class in the Toby’s-Prince Summer Tennis Festival at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Saulong outlasted Miguel Luna, 5-7, 7-6(10), 18-16, to arrange a duel with Vince Salas, who dominated Felipe Mapa, 6-1, 6-0, in the next stage of the weeklong event sponsored by Toby’s Sports and Prince. Bulilan, on the other hand, hung tough in the second set to complete a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over Roberto Azores Jr. for a second round clash with Elijan Pangilinan, who bundled out Gio Chakas, 6-0, 6-3.

In other results, Vincent Anida whipped Harvee Miranda, 6-0, 6-1; Harvey Alanis beat Jabs Barcenas, 6-1, 6-2, Jan Andre Rodriguez downed Ian Aggabao, 6-1, 6-0; Rodolfo Gabaldon III defeated Dario Sujica, 6-1, 6-1; Alfonso Vilar routed William Goco, 6-0, 6-1; Jan Relatores clobbered Carl Abadilla, 6-1, 6-0; Arkaine Cordova blanked John Sanciangco, 6-0, 6-0; Mikio Shimomura ripped Joseph dela Cruz, 6-0, 6-1; and Reuben Fernandez held off Mohammad Amerol, 6-4, 6-2.

Green race

"The Green Race," a fun run for the ongoing relief operations in Japan, will be held this Sunday at the DLSU-Dasmariñas campus in Cavite.

Organized by the Production Management class of the DLSU-Dasmariñas Graduate School of Business, the event will have races in the 5k and 3k categories. Interested participants can register at DLSU-D Graduate School of Business office or online at http://thegreenrace.blogspot.com.

Filoil cagefest

Mapua tries to notch its third win when it battles a struggling Jose Rizal University squad in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier League at The Arena in San Juan.

Game time is at 12:30 p.m. with the Cardinals hoping to tie Far Eastern University and Adamson for the lead. Other senior games will pit Emilio Aguinaldo College against St. Benilde at 2:15 p.m. and University of the East against Letran at 4 p.m. Mapua improved to 2-1 after blasting Letran, 80-62, last Friday.

In that game, big man Yousef Taha dominated the shaded lane to score 16 points and grab 9 rebounds in 20 minutes while Allan Mangahas, who plays for PC Gilmore in the PBA D-League, added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. JRU is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 79-63 loss to FEU on Saturday.

N.U. tryouts

In an effort to boost its lineup for the coming UAAP tournament, National University will hold a two-day tryout for its women's squad starting on May 21 (Saturday) at the NU gym. NU coach Paul Du said the tryout on Saturday will start from 7 a.m. while the Sunday tryout will begin at 9 a.m. Interested players must come early and for further details, look for assistant team manager Pat Aquino.
